For 2026 budgeting in Calgary, a recorded camera inspection plans at about $250 to $600, fixing one defect by excavation at $4,500 to $12,000, $10,000 to $30,000 to line or burst a full lateral, and $14,000 to $40,000 to dig and replace one. The one-call utility locate costs nothing. About 30 feet (9 m) of open-cut replacement works out near $11,000 to $23,000 before adjustments. Owners pay for their side.
- All figures here are planning ranges in 2026 Canadian dollars, before 5% GST; they are estimates, not quotes.
- The house side of the property line is the owner's bill; the street side, back to the main, is the City's pipe.
- Utility Safety Partners locates are free, but they do not mark your sewer line; that locate usually comes with a camera inspection.
- A 9 m (30 ft) open-cut replacement at typical depth under lawn plans at about $11,000 to $23,000; depth, hard surfaces, winter and City-side work push it higher.
- Community era changes the odds of needing work, not the price of a given job.

01 /What does sewer work cost in Calgary?
These ranges match those used across this network's Calgary pages. They are broad planning figures for single-family houses, compiled for budgeting, not surveyed prices. Your quotes may fall outside them.
| Work | Planning range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main-line clearing (auger), business hours | $200–$450 | Clears a blockage; does not show condition |
| Hydro jetting, residential line | $450–$1,100 | Common where roots or grease recur |
| Camera inspection with recorded video | $250–$600 | Ask whether locating and depth marking are included |
| Spot repair, open excavation | $4,500–$12,000 | One defect; depth drives the range |
| Trenchless lining or pipe bursting, full lateral | $10,000–$30,000 | Depends on length, access and condition |
| Full lateral replacement, open cut | $14,000–$40,000 | Depth, driveways and trees drive the top end |
| Backwater valve installation | $1,800–$4,500 | More in a finished basement; plumbing permit required |
Alberta adds 5% GST and has no provincial sales tax, so compare quotes on the same tax basis.
02 /Which side of the property line pays for what?
Money follows the ownership line. The text the City publishes with its service line data gives it the pipe from the sanitary main up to the property line and gives the homeowner the pipe from the property line to the house, to own and to maintain. No part of the monthly utility bill pays for the owner's segment; what the wastewater charge does fund is explained in Calgary water and sewer rates.
| Where the problem is | Who is responsible | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the house or under the basement floor | Owner | Hire a plumber or drain contractor |
| Between the foundation and the property line | Owner | Camera, then quotes for repair |
| At or near the property line | Depends on exact location | Report to 311 with video and distances |
| Between the property line and the main | City | Report to 311; the City assesses its pipe |
| In the main | City | Report to 311 |
When a private-side replacement needs the City-side connection redone as well, for example at a redevelopment, quotes often include City-side connection work, and the connection must be installed by a City-approved, indemnified contractor and inspected by the City. The City's page on water and sewer connections says the property owner covers the cost of installation by their contractor. Confirm how any City-side portion is handled with 311 before signing.
03 /What does it cost to locate a sewer line?
Two different locates are involved, and only one is free. Utility Safety Partners, Alberta's one-call service, marks lines owned by member utilities at no charge, with at least three full working days' notice. Its homeowner guidance says customer-owned water and sewer service lines are not located and that a private locator is needed for them.
- Public utility locate: free through Utility Safety Partners; required before digging.
- Your sewer line's route and depth: usually located with a sonde during a camera inspection, within the $250 to $600 planning range above when the quote includes locating. Ask whether it does.
- Standalone private locate: some locators price by the visit or the hour; ask for a written quote that lists which lines will be marked.
Why it matters for cost: a locate with depth readings is what lets a contractor price excavation accurately. Without it, quotes carry wider contingencies. The depth side is explained in how deep are sewer lines in Calgary.

04 /What does replacing 30 feet of sewer line cost in Calgary?
Thirty feet is about 9 metres, a common private-side length on a Calgary lot. Using the network's Calgary planning ranges, a base amount plus a per-metre amount, the arithmetic for 9 m at typical depth under lawn looks like this.
| Method | Base | Per metre | 9 m planning range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open cut | $6,000–$11,000 | $550–$1,300 | About $10,950–$22,700 |
| Lining (CIPP) | $4,000–$9,000 | $400–$1,150 | About $7,600–$19,350 |
| Pipe bursting | $5,000–$10,000 | $400–$1,100 | About $8,600–$19,900 |
| Spot repair (one defect) | $4,500–$12,000 flat | Not applicable | $4,500–$12,000 |
| Condition | Adjustment | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow line | About ×0.9 | Open cut and bursting |
| Deep line | About ×1.25 | Open cut and bursting |
| Landscaping over the line | +$500–$2,000 | Open cut and bursting |
| Driveway or concrete over the line | +$2,000–$6,000 | Open cut and bursting |
| Finished basement floor | +$2,000–$6,000 | Open cut and bursting |
| City-side connection work | +$3,000–$15,000 | All methods |
| Winter work | About ×1.10–1.25 | All methods |
Two cautions. Not every line can be lined or burst: collapses and sags generally need excavation, and the right method depends on the camera findings. And a 9 m private run is shorter than many full laterals, which is why the full-lateral ranges in the first table are higher.
05 /Does community era change the cost?
It changes the odds, not the price per job. A lining job in a 1960s community costs about the same as one in a 1990s community of the same length and access. What differs is how likely the line is to need work, and which work.
| Era | City-side record | Likely first spend | Typical follow-up if defects are found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inner city | 38.7% OTHER, 11.7% cast iron, 41.6% PVC | Camera of the whole run | Varies widely; transitions common |
| 1950s | Mixed tile, cast iron, TP and OTHER | Camera with material changes called out | Descaling or lining cast iron; spot repairs |
| 1960s–70s tile belt | 77.5% TIL (clay tile code) | Camera baseline | Root cutting cycles, lining or replacement |
| 1980s–90s | 87.6% PVC | Camera if symptoms | Belly or joint repairs |
| 2000s and newer | More than 95% PVC | Camera if symptoms | Debris removal, local repairs |
The City record describes only the City's segment; the private segment can be a different material and age. Look up your address with the Service Line Lookup and compare your community in the Community Sewer Atlas.
06 /How do you get a reliable number?
- Start with a recorded camera inspection
Every accurate quote depends on knowing the material, defects, length and depth. Ask for locating at defects and at the property line.
- Give every contractor the same scope
Share the same video, the City record and any 311 findings so quotes cover the same work on the same side of the property line.
- Ask what is included
Permit and inspection, locates, restoration, cleanout, disposal, before-and-after video and warranty terms.
- Compare on the same tax basis
Put all quotes before GST or all after.
For the full picture of why depth, soil and City standards drive price, see Calgary sewer design standards. When you are ready, request quotes from contractors who can scope and price your line.
FAQQuestions people ask
What would 30 feet of new sewer line cost in Calgary?
As a 2026 planning estimate, about 9 m of open-cut replacement at typical depth under lawn works out to roughly $11,000 to $23,000 before GST. Lining or bursting can be less if the line suits them; depth, driveways, winter and City-side work add to it.
How much does it cost to locate a sewer line in Calgary?
Public utility locates through Utility Safety Partners are free but do not mark your sewer. Your line is usually located during a camera inspection, which plans at about $250 to $600 when locating is included. These are estimates.
Does the City of Calgary pay for sewer line replacement?
The City owns and maintains the segment from the main to the property line. The homeowner pays for the private segment. Report suspected City-side problems to 311 before paying for work there.
Is sewer work more expensive in older Calgary communities?
A given job costs about the same, but older communities are more likely to need work. Tile, cast iron and pre-1960 records on the City side point to private lines of similar age.
Are these Calgary sewer prices quotes?
No. They are 2026 planning ranges for budgeting. Prices vary by access, depth, soil, surface, season, condition and contractor; only a written quote after a camera inspection is a price.
